How to Start an Art Journal

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

I love journaling. I have kept a journal (on and off, because I suck at consistency!) since I was a little girl. I also bullet journal, which is just a fancy name for keeping track of all the tasks I have to do in a day. The next logical step was obviously an art journal!

I have tried (and failed) multiple times to start an art journal. I do a page, and then I get bored and never come around to it again. Because one of my resolutions this is year is to try and finish what I start, I thought it would be a perfect time to start an art journal again. It must have been fate because my step daughter bought me a new journal for my birthday a couple of weeks ago.

I plan to post my pages on my social media pages, so be sure to keep a look out for those. I am @unlockedcolors on all social media platforms, so come check them out! I also started a board on Pinterest with a lot of fun inspirations, so feel free to look at those as well.

All you really need to start a art journal is a notebook, preferably one for different medias. This will give you thicker paper and allow you to play with different paints, pens and other fun supplies. I created a list of a couple of essentials that I think are going to be good for a beginner, like me. I don’t want to over complicate anything, this is more for fun than anything else.

Supplies

  • A notebook

  • Pens - I like Micron’s the best. They are pigment style pen and you can use watercolors with them and they won’t bleed.

  • Mod Podge - I love this stuff. I use it for everything. I usually get the matte finish because I do not like super shiny surfaces, but you can get whatever you like. I use this as a glue or a top coat.

  • Watercolors- I love watercolors the most, but any paint will work.

  • Paint brushes
