I feel like I have a love hate relationship with my phone. I love showing off my artwork by posting to social media. There are times however, that my husband will literally shove the phone out of my face because I am spending way too much time on it. There is this push and pull I feel towards social media. It is this great way to communicate with others, but at the same time it takes away from those right in front of you. I struggled writing this post because as much as I hate the fact that I am on my phone all the time, it can be used for good. With that being said, I am going to share my top four favorite applications that help me with my self care.
I have tried for so many years to meditate daily. It is a real struggle for me because for the life of me, I cannot shut off my brain. There are many meditating apps out there, and I urge you to try every one of them until you find one that works for you. My favorite by far is HEADSPACE. I love this app, and it has become the only one that has worked for me. I love the guided meditation feature, let’s face it, I wouldn’t be able to meditate without a prompt. It is easy to use, and I love the characters that go along with the app. It makes me want to meditate, which was huge for me. I am constantly trying new things and it is so hard for me to continue on with something.
TERRARIUM is actually a game, and I will be 100 percent honest with you that it wasn’t always about self care for me. This game lets you take care of plants. That’s it. You tap on the plant to create oxygen, which allows you to grow the plant and eventually plant new ones. It started out just wanting to see which new plants I could get, but it became so much more. I pick my thumbs when I am anxious. It is something I have done ever since I can remember. The skin around my thumbs are usually destroyed. I need something to keep my hands busy when I am anxious and this game became just want I was looking for. When I am feeling anxious, I just open up the app, and start tapping away. It keeps my stress levels down, and allows me to create something beautiful. I guess you could say that this is my version of a fidget spinner.
I hate counting calories but I feel like it keeps me in chec. I am an emotional eater. When I am upset, I eat. When I am stressed, I eat. Basically when I am not happy I eat. It can be chips, chocolate or my favorite cheese. I will have a bad day, come home and stuff my face with food.
FOODUCATE has helped me track my meals, and gives me motivational tips as well. I have tried a lot of other apps and this one has become my favorite. I have an Android phone (don’t hate on my iPhone users!) so I love that I can have a widget on my phone that shows exactly how many calories I have eaten, how much water I drank and the amount of steps I have taken.
Lastly, I am recommending the FABULOUS app. I saw this on social media about a year ago and instantly fell in love with it. You can get the free version, or pay for an upgraded one. I love that it breaks down your goals into smaller ones that are much more manageable. For example, it gives you a task, such as drinking a glass of water a day, and makes you stick with it for a week before adding on another goal. Their Instagram and Facebook pages are full of wonderful graphics, and motivational quotes. GO CHECK THEM OUT!
Social media can cause stress, anxiety and depression. It can take you away from your family and friends around you. Instead of using these apps for evil, try out one of these “good” apps and seed how it changes your day!
